If you’re scheduled for oculoplastic surgery for medical or cosmetic reasons, knowing how to prepare can help reduce anxiety, prevent complications, and ensure the smoothest experience possible.
From pre-op instructions to the day-of checklist, here are 6 important things to know before your oculoplastic procedure.
1. Stop Certain Supplements 14 Days Before Surgery
Some over-the-counter supplements can increase the risk of bleeding during and after surgery. Discontinue fish oil or turmeric supplements at least two weeks before your scheduled date, unless instructed otherwise by your surgeon.
If you take prescription medications, especially blood thinners, be sure to review them with your surgical team well in advance.
2. Don’t Eat or Drink 8 Hours Before Surgery
You must not eat or drink anything during the eight hours before your surgery arrival time.
This includes:
- Water
- Coffee or tea
- Gum or mints
The only exception: You may take blood pressure or heart medications the morning of surgery with a small sip of water. Following this fasting guideline is crucial for your safety during anesthesia.
3. Arrange for Transportation Before & After Surgery
You will not be allowed to drive yourself home after surgery. Please make sure to:
- Have a trusted adult accompany you to and from the surgery center
- Arrange for support at home in the hours following your procedure, as you may still feel groggy or disoriented
Your care team will provide detailed post-op instructions and will want to ensure someone is there to support you right away.
4. Dress for Comfort & Easy Removal
On the day of surgery, wear:
- A comfortable pair of pants or skirt
- A button-down shirt or blouse (to avoid pulling clothing over your face afterward)
Do not wear:
- Jewelry or metal accessories
- Contact lenses
- Makeup (especially face or eye makeup)
- Perfume or scented products
Leave valuables at home, and don’t forget to bring your photo ID, insurance card, and any facility co-pay.
5. Cleanse Thoroughly
To reduce infection risk:
- Bathe or shower thoroughly the night before or the morning of surgery
- Wash your hair and face well
- On the morning of surgery, do not apply makeup, lotions, or creams—especially around the eyes
Your skin should be clean and makeup-free to ensure a sterile surgical environment.
6. Follow Your Surgeon’s Instructions
Your surgeon may provide personalized instructions based on your health, medications, or procedure type. Always ask if you’re unsure about medications, supplements, or the recovery process. Being well-informed helps you feel more confident, relaxed, and ready.
