Droopy Eyelids: Is Eyelid Surgery Right for You?

Eyelid surgery, also called blepharoplasty, is a procedure that can improve both appearance and vision. For many people, drooping eyelids or under-eye puffiness may cause discomfort, reduced confidence, or even obstructed sight. An oculoplastic surgeon can help determine whether eyelid surgery is the right solution for you.

What Causes Droopy Eyelids (Ptosis)?

Ptosis is the medical term for drooping upper eyelids. It may be:

  • Age-related: Muscles stretch and weaken, leading to sagging eyelids.
  • Congenital (present at birth): One or both eyelids droop, sometimes requiring early treatment to prevent vision problems.
  • Medical-related: Conditions such as myasthenia gravisHorner syndrome, stroke, tumors, or eye nerve/muscle disorders.
  • Temporary: Infections or styes can occasionally cause lid drooping.

In children, untreated ptosis may cause developmental delays or vision impairment.

How Eyelid Surgery Works

An oculoplastic surgeon performs eyelid surgery to restore proper eyelid function and appearance. Depending on your needs, the procedure can:

  • Remove excess skin and fat that create puffiness or “bags” under the eyes
  • Strengthen or reposition the eyelid muscle to correct drooping
  • Improve vision if eyelids are blocking the line of sight
  • Refresh the overall appearance of the eyes

Surgery is typically outpatient, with recovery lasting about 1-2 weeks.

Cosmetic vs. Functional Blepharoplasty

  • Cosmetic blepharoplasty: Improves appearance only and is usually not covered by insurance.
  • Functional blepharoplasty: Recommended when drooping eyelids interfere with vision. In this case, vision testing is performed, and results may be submitted to your insurance provider for coverage consideration.

Eyelid Surgery for Children

When ptosis is present in young children and interferes with vision, surgery is often recommended around ages 3-5. Early correction helps prevent the need for constant head-tilting, neck strain, or other developmental complications.

Consider a Consultation for Eyelid Surgery

You may benefit from an eyelid surgery consultation if:

  • Droopy or puffy eyelids affect your vision
  • You feel self-conscious about your eyes
  • Makeup application no longer provides the results you want
  • Eyelid heaviness causes discomfort or strain
